Preventing Cockroach Infestations: Protect Your Home

Practical prevention tips, early warning checks, and proofing advice to reduce the risk of future infestations.

Why Cockroach Prevention Is Essential

Cockroaches are one of the hardest pests to eliminate once established. They breed rapidly, hide in places that are difficult to reach, and have developed resistance to many common insecticides.

Prevention is always better — and cheaper — than treatment. Cockroaches need three things: warmth, moisture, and food. Remove or restrict access to these, and you dramatically reduce the risk of an infestation.

Keep Your Kitchen Scrupulously Clean

The kitchen is the epicentre of most cockroach infestations. German cockroaches in particular thrive in the warm, humid environment around cookers, dishwashers, and fridges.

  • Wipe down all surfaces every evening — do not leave food residue, grease, or crumbs on worktops, stovetops, or splashbacks.
  • Clean behind and under the oven, fridge, and dishwasher regularly — grease and food debris build up in these areas and provide a food source for cockroaches.
  • Sweep or vacuum kitchen floors daily, paying attention to edges and under units.
  • Wash up before bed — do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
  • Empty kitchen bins regularly and use bins with tight-fitting lids.

Store Food Properly

Cockroaches can feed on almost anything organic, including cardboard, glue, and soap. Proper food storage removes their primary food source.

  • Store all dry goods (cereals, flour, rice, pasta, sugar) in sealed glass or metal containers.
  • Do not leave fruit bowls out overnight — overripe fruit attracts cockroaches.
  • Keep pet food in sealed containers and do not leave bowls out overnight.
  • Check the backs of food cupboards regularly for droppings or egg cases.

Fix Moisture Problems

Cockroaches need water even more than food. Reducing moisture makes your home far less hospitable.

  • Fix dripping taps, leaking pipes, and condensation problems immediately.
  • Dry sinks, baths, and shower trays before bed.
  • Use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms to reduce humidity.
  • Check under sinks for slow leaks or damp — these are common cockroach harbourage sites.
  • Do not overwater indoor plants — standing water in saucers attracts cockroaches.

Seal Cracks and Entry Points

Cockroaches hide in cracks during the day and can enter through surprisingly small gaps.

  • Seal gaps around pipes under sinks, behind dishwashers, and around boiler flues with caulk or expanding foam.
  • Fill cracks between skirting boards and walls, and between kitchen units and walls.
  • Check around extractor fan outlets — cockroaches can enter through external vent covers.
  • In flats, seal around any shared pipework and ducting — cockroaches travel between units through these routes.

Special Considerations for Flats

Cockroach infestations in flats are notoriously difficult to prevent and resolve because cockroaches travel freely between units via shared ducting, pipework, and wall cavities.

If you live in a flat and suspect cockroaches, report it to building management immediately. Effective control in a multi-unit building requires simultaneous treatment of all affected flats — treating one flat while the cockroaches harbour in the next is ineffective.

Seal every possible route between your flat and neighbouring units: around pipes, behind electrical sockets, around extractor fans, and along skirting boards.

Monitoring with Sticky Traps

Placing sticky traps (glue boards) in key locations is an effective way to monitor for cockroach activity before it becomes a full infestation.

Place traps behind the fridge, under the oven, under the kitchen sink, and near any warm pipe runs. Check them weekly. If you start catching cockroaches, act immediately — do not wait for numbers to increase.
