Rat Species in the UK: Identification and Behaviour

How to identify the main UK species, where they hide, and why species differences matter for treatment.

Which Rat Species Are Found in the UK?

There are two rat species present in the UK: the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus). In practice, almost every rat problem in UK homes and businesses involves the brown rat. The black rat is extremely rare and largely confined to a few port areas.

Knowing which species you are dealing with is useful for understanding their behaviour, but in terms of treatment, the approach is the same for both.

Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus)

The brown rat — also called the common rat, sewer rat, or Norway rat — is the species behind virtually all rat infestations in the UK. It is one of the most successful and widespread mammals on Earth.

  • Size: body length 15–27cm, plus a tail of 10–24cm. Weight 200–500g.
  • Colour: brown to grey-brown on top, lighter (often grey-white) on the belly.
  • Ears: small, rounded, and do not reach the eyes when folded forward.
  • Tail: thick, shorter than the body length, scaly.
  • Droppings: 10–14mm long, blunt-ended, dark brown.

Brown Rat Behaviour and Habits

Brown rats are ground-dwelling and excellent burrowers. They dig extensive burrow systems near foundations, under sheds, alongside watercourses, and beneath compost bins and decking.

They are strong swimmers and commonly use the sewer system to move between properties — entering buildings through broken drains, toilet seals, and ground-floor pipe connections.

Brown rats are neophobic: they are cautious of new objects in their environment. This means traps and bait stations may be avoided for several days after placement — professional pest controllers account for this by allowing a settling-in period.

They are most active at dusk and dawn, though they will forage during the day if the population is large or food is scarce.

Black Rat (Rattus rattus)

The black rat — also called the ship rat or roof rat — was once common throughout the UK but has been largely displaced by the brown rat over the past 200 years. It is now extremely rare on mainland Britain.

  • Size: body length 16–24cm, plus a tail that is longer than the body. Weight 150–250g.
  • Colour: dark brown to black on top, lighter on the belly.
  • Ears: large, thin, and hairless — reach the eyes when folded forward.
  • Tail: thin, longer than the body, scaly.
  • Droppings: 8–12mm long, pointed and spindle-shaped.

Black Rat Behaviour and Habits

Unlike brown rats, black rats are excellent climbers. They prefer to live above ground — in roof spaces, upper floors, and trees. In countries where they are common, they are a major pest in attics, warehouse rafters, and shipping containers.

In the UK, confirmed sightings are extremely rare and mostly limited to a few locations near ports. If you have a rat problem in the UK, it is almost certainly brown rats.

How to Tell Brown Rats from Mice

The most common identification confusion is between young rats and adult mice. Key differences:

  • Size — even a young rat is stockier and heavier than an adult mouse. A young rat has noticeably large feet relative to its body.
  • Head shape — rats have blunt, rounded heads; mice have more triangular, pointed heads.
  • Ears — mouse ears are large relative to the head and rounded; young rat ears are small relative to the head.
  • Tail — a mouse tail is thin and roughly the same length as the body; a young rat's tail is thicker and shorter relative to its body.
  • Droppings — the most reliable identifier. Rat droppings (10–14mm) are significantly larger than mouse droppings (3–8mm).

Why Species Identification Matters

In the UK, the treatment approach for brown rats is standard: professional rodenticide in tamper-resistant bait stations, strategic trap placement, and proofing. The brown rat's burrowing and sewer-travelling habits determine where bait stations are placed and what proofing measures are prioritised.

If you are unsure what you are dealing with, a professional rat control technician can identify the species from droppings, gnaw marks, and behaviour patterns. Contact BuzzKill for a free inspection.
